"SCIENTIFIC PAINTING"

Date 7/2006

This painting was done using acrylic paint over 50x35cm 240g/m2 paper, to represent the "true view" when traveling trough space on a real spacecraft.

Scientifically true, we don't have completed till today the required technology to build the motor, but is realy possible in a few years.

This spacecraft uses a fusion motor. Several Hi-Power continuous lasers target the ignition point and fires till the plasma ignites (1). When the plasma ignites the motor maintain its combustion by transforming 2 Hydrogen atoms into 1 Helium atom (2), the resulting energy difference maintains the combustion and propels the Helium atoms that collides with the motor parabolic reflector (3) propelling the spacecraft.

Hydrogen is the only matter free in space, therefore at large velocities, can be collected by the frontal parabolic collector(4).

Since the spacecraft can't turn rapidly (is BIG) the lasers point always toward the target. If a small asteroid is found it must be evaporate by the lasers before the collision. Large celestial objects (asteroids, comets, etc.) must be detected far enough to calculate the correct path that avoids them.
This is logic since large celestial objects can be detected at larger distances.

This spacecraft is traveling at approximately 2/3 of light speed... In order to do that is accelerating its speed at 1g for near 1year(5), during this phase of the trip the people in the spacecraft will see the travel target over their heads.This is the acceleration phase of the trip.

When the final speed is achieved the acceleration will stop and the spacecraft will start rotating to generate artificial gravity during the rest of this trip phase: The constant vecocity phase.
During this phase of the trip the people in the spacecraft will see the travel target over their sides, like we see thrugh a train window. This phase of the trip will be continued till the distance to to the target equals the distance needed to decelerate to 0 m/s at 1 g.

When this distance is reached the spacecraft rotates to put the fusion motor towards the target, the motor is ignited, the rotation stops, and now the people in the spacecraft will see the travel target under their foot.This is the deceleration phase.

If we look to the stars at this speeds, we will only be able to see the stars perpendicular to the spacecraft movement, since the stars in front of the movement will shift towards the ultraviolet spectrum and those in ours back towards the infrared(6).
Owever the stars that we will see will form an espectacular hudje rainbow inluding all the colors from the red to the violet.(7).

TBC Still painting...

Notes:
(1)- The energy supplied by the lasers (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission) must overcome the natural electrostatic repulsion field between the nucleus of the 2H atoms. Once two atoms are close enough together the electrostatic field is overcome by the strong nuclear force and the reaction starts.
back

(2)- To be more precise the fusion can be

2H+2H => 3H+3He 1.8MeV
or better
2H+3H => 4He+ 17.6MeV
Most of the released energy must be contained by a magnetic field, in order to maintain the fusion, a part of that energy is released towards the parabolic reflector(3) to propel the spacecraft.
back

(3)- This is not really a reflector, it is meant to absorb all the energy and radiate it to the back as thermal radiation (Photons), so the spacecraft if efficiently propelled and no radiation energy is able to reach the travelers. The surface of this "reflector" will be very VERY hot...
back

(4)- The intraestellar matter (the matter between the stars and galaxies) is composed by about 90% H, 9% He and 1% of dust (metals, etc). The density of the H is about 103 to 108 per m3. The size of the frontal parabolic collector must be calculated accordingly, it will be BIG.
back

(5)- If Galileo & Newton laws where applicable, after 1 year ascelerating at 1 g (9.81 m/s2) Our speed whould be ~3.1 108m/s, exceding speed light... but scince Einshtein Relativity law must be applied here, due to the compression of time and space, the speed will be about 2.1 108m/s since

dX'=dX x (1-v2/c2)1/2
and
dt'=dt / (1-v2/c2)1/2

back

(6)- This is caused by the Doppler effect, but corrected for this high velocities.
The frecuency shift of the stars light spectrum will be :

f' = f ((1-(v/c)) / (1-v2/c2)1/2)

back

(7)- Our eyes are able to see from ~420nm (Violet) to ~780nm (Red), the stars in front of the movement will get shorther wavelengths, and those on the back longer.
